Choosing Fabric:

When selecting fabric for upholstery making sure the fabric is fit for furniture is the most important thing to consider first. Choose fabric that will update the piece, not give it the look it had before.

Go for a different colour or go from plain to pattern.

If the fabric is not durable and does not have a high rub count it wont last. Fabric strength is rated by conducting an abrasion test. The more resistant the fabric is to abrasion the higher the rub count.The rub count will allow the decision to be made about what fabric goes where.

There is a wide variety of upholstery fabric available ranging from textured and plain weaves, patterns and prints in a wide variety of colours. There are also an extensive range of Vinyl/PU/Faux leathers which are easy to clean and great for headboards and ottomans .

Once a fabric is decided on it should be taken home and put in the space. Live with it for a few days and see how the colour and look of the fabric changes in different light.

Upholstery can be classified as light, domestic and contract.

Light being 15000 rubs or less and is mostly used on occasional chairs and items such as scatter cushions and lamp shades-Bedrooms.

Domestic 20000-25000 rubs and is suitable for couches, dining chairs, kitchen booths and window seats-Living Room.

Contract upholstery starts at 30 000 rubs. Hotels, restaurants and offices are areas that would need to make use of fabric with a high rub count as these are areas with high traffic and need fabric that is extremely durable.

Style

Upholstered furniture is the root of an interior and sets the mood of a room. It changes the look and feel of a space. A wingback chair in a velvet damask might encourage you to sit up straight but a slip cover sofa could do the opposite.

Once the durability of the fabric has been identified then style color and pattern come into play.

The fabric you choose will determine the mood you are trying to portray. If a more traditional style is wanted go for rich velvets and silks and combine stripes with checks and plains. If a more contemporary look is what you want then neutral shades of gray and white and natural cottons and linens will do the trick.
